Reviewer: Michael (Victoria, Australia)

Although this book is comprehensive and covers many important areas the topic in which it truly excels in is awareness. You may already have devastating moves and a good level of awareness but I would still recommend this book even to seasoned street fighters, because I honestly believe you will still gain real insights and tactics from the ideas presented here, showing you the way to hone your awareness and intuition to extremely high levels. Informative and a joy to read.

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 When Seconds Count Review!
Reviewer: Travis M. (DeQuincy, Louisiana)

When Seconds Count is THE companion to your Reality-Based Self-Defense Studies. When Seconds Count succeeds where most other traditional martial arts systems fails by explaining the legal aspect of self-defense. Also contained within the book are several workbook-style exercises (I recommend getting a notebook for completing those assignments) which prepare you mentally for situations where your judgment may need sharpening and foreARMED. You're not going to get a bunch of fancy-schmancy B.S. about chi flow or terms you're not going to's all in terms you'll comprehend and understand and, if purchased alongside The Street Fighter Package DVD series, you'll find your confidence in your judgment and abilities skyrockets. Genocyde's Note: The information contained within this book truly does make it Everyone's Guide To Self-Defense. Once purchased, you'll see that there are no false claims here that you're going to become a ninja or the equivalent of some spec-op soldier. What you will find is honest, hard-hitting and applicable in the immediate sense. Since getting this book, my insight into the world of Reality-Based Self-Defense has grown exponentially. I honestly think that this book will arm you with the knowledge needed to get your training in order.

This book exceeded by expectations. Anyone can appreciate the information in the book. Not just about the fight itself. Excellent content involving how to diffuse a potentially dangerous situation and how to be ready for such a situation whenever it may arise. The section on awareness is particularly useful.

Reviewer: Hammad (Germantown, Maryland)

If I had to recommend only one CFA book, I would time and time again pick When Seconds Count. As an introduction to CFA and reality based self defense, this book delivers on all levels. The book starts out by painting the grim realities of today‚s streets, and makes it painfully clear why traditional martial arts don't work in the modern context and why CFA is the end all be all leader of pragmatic self defense. The pages are packed with critical information, everything from natural body weapons, de-escalation stance, sections on knives and guns, and several appendixes filled with useful tips and advice. Even outside of a self defense mindset, this is a must read if only to dispel the romantic and sugarcoated notion of the streets which are propagated by the media and traditional martial arts schools. 5 stars.

Reviewer: T. Brown (Arlington, Virginia)

When Seconds Count is an excellent book on Self-Defense. Correction, When Seconds Count is the book that will get you home safe to your family. It is a no nonsense, practical handbook on how Self-Defense works ˆ without the B.S. You will learn how to detect, assess, avoid, and de-escalate violent situations and if necessary fight back and win. There are also plenty of interactive exercises throughout the book to help develop as a practitioner of Self-Defense. This volume starts out with an introduction about violent human nature and then discusses the history and description of Contemporary Fighting Arts. The next three chapters discuss some of the most vital components of Self Defense: Awareness, Assessment, and De-escalation. The last two chapters deal with Fighting Back and Guns, Knives, & Other Weapons. There are also four appendices full of information like CFA Safety Rules & Guidelines and Selecting a Self-Defense School to name a few. This is my first product from Mr. Franco and definitely will not be my last. When Seconds Count is a great foundation and I‚m looking forward to utilizing all of the CFA resources that are available (books, DVDs, etc). Thank you Mr. Franco; you have a student for life.

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 If you only read one book on self-defense...
Reviewer: Nico (Gaithersburg, Maryland)

I firmly believe that 'When Seconds Count' is a book that everyone should read, and when I say "everyone", I mean it. It doesn't matter if you have no interest in self-defense or martial arts. It doesn't matter if you live in the safest, most violence-free town in America or any other country, the innovative concepts Sammy teaches is all knowledge that everyone needs to be exposed to and understand. Unfortunately, you can't know how important it is until you've bought the book and begun studying it, and when you do, you start saying to yourself things like, "Wow, I've lived my whole life and I haven't even considered these things. How many times have I been in a potentially dangerous situation and not even realized it? How many times have I been unaware of my surroundings and been in a position where I could easily have been victimized? How lucky have I been? And had I been assaulted in those situations, how would I have reacted?"

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Great self defense book!
Reviewer: Greg (Rockville, Maryland)

I purchased this book as a brand new CFA student. I've found that training with Mr. Franco in person involves a tremendous amount of information. CFA is an extremely analytical and reactionary discipline. The only way to keep up with the program is to study the material outside of class. 'When Seconds Count' not only provides the reader with an in-depth understanding of the development and philosophies of CFA, but it will change the way you think about the world we live in. If you're interested in learning more about CFA and/or you're trying to heighten your awareness of self-defense and the very real threats that we all face, 'When Seconds Count' is a must read.

This book is the definitive guide on self defense and should be the starting point of an education in CFA. Mr. Franco starts by showing us the truly dark side of the human race, and why it is every citizen‚s personal responsibility to learn to protect themselves and their loved ones. He then goes into areas that are not often covered in self defense classes, such as how to sharpen your awareness to avoid being in a violent situation in the first place. Then if violence is inevitable, Mr. Franco shows us physically, mentally, and spiritually what it takes to fight back against a violent criminal aggressor and win. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about learning real world self defense.

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Best, book on self-defense
Reviewer: maugster (Los Angeles, California)

When Seconds Count is one of the best, if not the best, book on self-defense that I've read. Mr. Franco takes a step-by-step approach to explain in detail the various aspects of self-defense. He paints a rather graphic picture of the evil human beings are capable of committing. Next, he provides, in detail, the preliminary aspects of self-defense: awareness, assessment and de-escalation. By increasing our skills in these three areas, it is possible to avoid the need to fight back. But if that is not possible, Mr. Franco provides the tools to do so. The last option available is the use of deadly force. He explains, in detail, the advantages/disadvantages of using guns and knives. The material is presented in such a way as to make the reader understand their responsibility in their own self-defense. I particularly liked the quiz, which helped me assess my risk as a crime victim. In addition, Mr. Franco provides a chapter on CFA Safety Rules & Guidelines covering automotive, street, child, home, workplace, telephone and vacation & travel safety which I have found to be very useful. I recommend this book to anyone concerned about this issue. I particularly would recommend it to women. Although I initially found some of the material rather graphic and disturbing, further readings and experience convinced me of its truthfulness. The less illusions people have about self-defense, the less likely they are to be surprised by violent crime.
